While the above young soldiers were enjoying a night off at the local disco which was being held at the Dropin Well Public House, Ballykelly, County Londonderry, on the 6th December 1982 just before Christmas, a time bomb which had been planted by INLA exploded in the confined space of the Disco, killing 11 soldiers and 6 civilians, 8 of whom were serving in the 1st Battalion the Cheshire Regiment. INLA planted the bomb knowing it would also kill civilians, Protestant and Catholic.
